My Take on the Need for More Groups
Posted by Teagan Blackthorne on January 16, 2008
Apparently the push for more groups has come under fire recently but I don’t see why. I have been wanting an increase in group size for some time now. Anyone in the business field in SL knows that those 25 spots get filled up quickly with business related things leaving you almost no room to stay on top of things with your favorite designers. I don’t know about anyone else but I would really love to stay in the know when my favorite designers are having sales, specials, announcements, events, and new releases(especially hair). It sucks that I cannot join the groups for all my favorites. I know there is Fashion Consolidated but not every shop is part of that group. Did I go and vote on Jira Issue Misc-208 after reading about it on Vint Flaken’s blog? You bet your sweet bottom I did and then I sent the link to friends.
I looked at the groups I am in and their purposes:
Groups related to my store:4
Groups related to freebies I have placed somewhere: 3 (I had to drop 2)
Groups related to business in SL: 2
Groups related to charities: 2 (wish it could be more)
Groups related to hair designers and Savoir Hair: 6 (wish I could have more to stay on top of hair sales & releases)
Group for building my home: 1
Groups belonging to friends: 2
Groups for designers: 3
There are so many more groups that I wish I could belong to but spaces are tight. I know that people have switched over to subscribe-o-matic but I just can’t see myself paying for this service at this time and it is only a short term solution. This system does not help the land use issues and social groups. Many people who have store locations in many places tend to have a build group for each place and this can really add up. I only have 3 shops but I know many stores with 15 or more.
There has been a petition going around SL in a notecard to double the group numbers but this method reminds me of the spam emails you get “add your name, send it to a friend, and Bill Gates will give you $5“. With Jira, I know it is part of SL, wont get lost in the shuffle, and can see my vote. Looking to vote on the issue and need that URL again: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-208.
As for the join the group and leave the group thing, anyone is welcome to join my group, grab the freebie, and go. I don’t mind. I use the group as a way to give out a limited time only freebie. It doesn’t bother me.
